How JNVST Cutoffs Are Decided: The 4 Golden Rules

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) **does not officially publish centralized cutoff lists**. Since each JNV admits only **80 students** per district, competition is entirely localized. Cutoffs are calculated independently within each district using the following strict priorities:

1. The 75% Rural Quota

At least **60 of the 80 total seats are reserved exclusively for Rural candidates**. To claim this reservation, a student must have completed Classes 3, 4, and 5 in a recognized rural government or private school. Urban students are restricted to competing for the remaining 20 “Open” seats, driving urban cutoffs significantly higher.

2. The 33% Gender security

At least **one-third of all selected candidates must be girls**. If the highest-scoring students across rural and urban categories are predominantly boys, the selection system drops the cutoff exclusively for female candidates until the minimum requirement of 27 girls is met.

3. Caste & Category Allocations

The remaining seats are carefully allocated to align with national and local reservation guidelines:

• Other Backward Classes (OBC): 27% seat reservation.
• Scheduled Caste (SC): Minimum of 15% reservation.
• Scheduled Tribe (ST): Minimum of 7.5% reservation.
• General (UR): Fills the remaining unreserved slots.

4. District Competition Tiers

This is where the biggest scoring discrepancy arises. Highly populated districts with a dense coaching presence (such as Sikar in Rajasthan, Prayagraj or Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, or Patna in Bihar) experience intense competition. Cutoffs in these regions often settle between **95% to 98.75%**. Conversely, tribal or low-density regions see cutoffs relax down to **78% to 83%** for identical student profiles.
